1. What Are the Origins of the Cavalier?

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel originated in the United Kingdom and traces its roots back to small spaniels that were beloved by members of the British royal family and aristocracy.
As the name “King Charles” suggests, King Charles II of England was famously devoted to small spaniels in the 17th century.
◾️What Does “Cavalier” Mean?
The word “Cavalier” can mean “knight” or “gentleman.”
In 17th-century England, supporters of the monarchy were also known as “Cavaliers.”
So even the elegant name “Cavalier” reflects a little of the breed’s connection to British history 👑
◾️What About “King Charles”?
The “King Charles” part of the name comes from King Charles II of England.
He was well known for his love of small spaniels, and these little dogs often appeared alongside members of royalty and the aristocracy in paintings of the time.
◾️So, What Is a Spaniel?
“Spaniel” does not refer to just one specific breed.
It is a term historically used for a group of dogs that worked alongside people during bird hunting.
Spaniels helped locate birds in grass and undergrowth, flush them out, and in some cases retrieve game.
The modern Cavalier developed in the 20th century through efforts to recreate the type of small, longer-muzzled spaniel seen in old paintings.

When we trace the Cavalier’s history, we can find dogs with a similar appearance in old European paintings.
In A King Charles Spaniel, painted around 1866 by the renowned French artist Édouard Manet, a small spaniel is depicted.
It is not a modern Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but its large eyes and long, drooping ears may remind us of today’s Cavaliers.
Small spaniels have been cherished by royalty and aristocrats for centuries, and their history has even been preserved through works of art.

They are also often mentioned as a classic example of a breed that may be too friendly to make an effective guard dog...!

These features give the Cavalier its elegant appearance, but they are also areas where the coat can rub, tangle, or become matted more easily.
After walks, it’s a good idea to check the feathering for leaves, small pieces of debris, or anything else that may have become caught in the coat 🌿

4. Cavalier Coat Type and Characteristics
◾️Coat
・Long and silky
・Straight or slightly wavy
・Double coat
Cavaliers have a double coat consisting of an outer coat and an undercoat.
They may shed more during seasonal changes, so regular brushing is important for helping remove loose hair.
In particular, the:
ears, chest, belly, legs, and tail
have longer feathering, which gives the Cavalier its graceful appearance ✨
At the same time, the soft, long coat can easily develop tangles and mats due to friction, so it is important to check the coat regularly.
5. Common Brushing Concerns for Cavaliers
One of the main grooming concerns for Cavaliers is tangling in the feathered areas.
Pay special attention to:
・Behind the ears
・Under the front legs
・Chest
・Belly
・Leg feathering
・Tail
Even if the coat looks smooth on the surface, small tangles may be hiding underneath.
Rather than waiting until a large mat forms, the key is to notice small tangles early and gently care for them before they become worse.
6. How to Use SHARR on a Cavalier
◾️STEP 1: Check the Coat With Your Hands
Before brushing, gently run your hands over your dog’s body and check for tangles or mats.
Pay particular attention to the area behind the ears, under the legs, chest, and feathering on the legs.
If there is a large mat, do not try to pull through it forcefully with SHARR.
For light tangles, you can use either the boar-bristle side or the 14K gold-plated pin side and gently tap the tangled area with a “tap, tap, tap” motion, gradually loosening it little by little.
Be careful not to pull unnecessarily on the skin, and always work at a pace that is comfortable for your dog.
For severe mats, we recommend using a comb or slicker brush as needed, or consulting a professional groomer.
◾️STEP 2: Smooth the Coat With the 14K Gold-Plated Pin Side
Once you have checked that there are no major tangles, use the 14K gold-plated pin side to smooth the coat.
For the Cavalier’s long feathering, avoid brushing straight from the roots all at once.
Instead, work gradually in this order:
Ends → Mid-lengths → Roots
For areas such as the ears, chest, and legs, gently support the hair near the roots with your other hand while brushing.
This helps reduce pulling on the skin.
Use light pressure and brush gently in the direction of hair growth.
◾️STEP 3: Finish With the Boar-Bristle Side
Finish with the boar-bristle side ✨
Brush gently in the direction of hair growth, moving over the head, back, sides of the body, and the longer feathering.
The boar-bristle side of SHARR also contains nylon bristles in addition to boar bristles.
Use it to help smooth the overall coat and create that soft, flowing Cavalier finish.
7. Areas That Need Extra Brushing Attention
One of the most important areas to check on a Cavalier is behind the ears 👂
Because of their long, floppy ears, the hair around the ear base and behind the ears can rub together easily and develop hidden tangles.
Also remember to check the feathering on the:
underarms, chest, legs, belly, and tail
As part of your daily bonding routine, simply running your fingers through these areas and asking yourself,
“Any tangles today?”
can make it easier to notice small changes in the coat.
8. Recommended Brushing Frequency and Timing
◾️Brushing Frequency
We recommend checking your Cavalier’s coat as regularly as possible.
In particular, after walks or after wearing clothes or a harness, check areas where friction is more likely to occur.
You do not need to brush for a long time every single session.
If your dog is not a big fan of brushing, it is perfectly fine to divide grooming into short sessions, such as:
