ðŸ SHARR Breed Spotlight: Chihuahua Edition

Introduction ðŸ
Big ears, expressive eyes, and a personality that fills the roomâChihuahuas may be small, but they make a big impression ð§¡
Whether theyâre snuggling on your lap or playing with their favorite toy, their many little expressions are part of what makes them so lovable.
Hi, everyone! Kevin here from NENEâs store ð¶
In this guide, weâll explore Chihuahua history, personality, and everyday needs, along with coat care and brushing tips for both long-haired and smooth-coated pups âš
Whether you share your home with a Chihuahua or simply love the breed, we hope you enjoy getting to know them a little better!
1. Meet the Chihuahua: A Little Companion from Mexico ð²ðœðµ
Chihuahuas originate from Mexico and take their name from the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.
Hereâs a fun fact: Chihuahua is Mexicoâs largest state by area! ð
One of the worldâs smallest dog breeds, named after Mexicoâs largest stateâthatâs quite a contrast ð€
Although the breedâs exact origins remain uncertain, Chihuahuas are thought to be connected to the Techichi, a small dog kept by people in ancient Mexico.
These early dogs were more than companions. In some ancient beliefs, they were also thought to guide human souls into the afterlife.
Today, Chihuahuas are cherished around the world as companion dogs and much-loved family members ð¡ð§¡

2. What Is a Chihuahuaâs Personality Like? ð¶ð
Chihuahuas are often described as:
𧡠Affectionate with their families
ð¡ Intelligent and eager to learn
ðŸ Lively and courageous
ð Alert and sometimes wary of unfamiliar things
Some love to stay close to their family but prefer to observe new people from a distance. Others are remarkably confident or happily entertain themselves with a favorite toy ð§ž
Of course, every dog is different. Personality is also shaped by individual experiences and the environment they grow up in.
Rather than assuming every Chihuahua will behave the same way, take time to discover your pupâs favorite activities and the kind of interaction they feel comfortable with ð¿

3. Small in Size, Full of Energy: Physical Traits & Daily Life ðâïž
Chihuahuas are among the worldâs smallest dog breeds.
Their distinctive features include a rounded âapple-shapedâ head, large upright ears, and expressive, rounded eyes ð
The FCI breed standard specifies a weight of 1â3 kg, but this is a breed judging standardânot a universal healthy-weight target. Some Chihuahuas are naturally larger, and an appropriate weight depends on each dogâs frame and build.
Despite their size, Chihuahuas are active dogs who enjoy walks and playtime ðŸ
For healthy adults, PDSA recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, split into shorter walks. Adjust this to your dogâs age, health, and the weather.
Sniffing, exploring, and working out a treat puzzle can be enjoyable activities, too ð§©âš
And although Chihuahuas are easy to pick up, that doesnât mean they always want to be carried. Let your pup know youâre there and watch their response before handling them ð§¡

4. Understanding Chihuahua Coats: Long and Smooth ð¶âš
Chihuahuas come in two coat varieties.
ð€ Long Coat
Long-haired Chihuahuas have fine, soft fur that may be straight or slightly wavy.
Longer hair, known as feathering, appears around the ears and neck, behind the legs, and on the tail.
Those soft wisps that move as they walk are part of their charm! ðŸ
ð€ Smooth Coat
Smooth-coated Chihuahuas have short hair that lies close to the body, with a soft texture and a glossy appearance.
Short hair still sheds, so you may find tiny hairs on your clothes after a cuddle ð€
Undercoat presence and thickness can vary, too. Choose your grooming approach based on how your dogâs coat actually feels, not just how long it looks ð¿

5. Common Chihuahua Grooming Challenges ððŸ
For long-haired Chihuahuas, tangles in the feathering can be a familiar problem.
âTheir back feels silky, but thereâs a little mat behind an ear!â
âThe fur under their front legs looks tangled after I take off the harness.â
Sound familiar? ð
Longer hair and areas rubbed by clothing or harnesses can develop tangles that arenât obvious during a quick stroke along the back.
With smooth-coated Chihuahuas, short hairs can collect on blankets and clothing, leaving you wondering how such a little dog sheds so much! ð¶
For either coat type, check the fur and skin as you go and keep grooming gentle ð§¡
6. How to Use SHARR on Your Chihuahua ðª®âš
SHARR combines 14-karat gold-plated pins on one side with natural boar bristles on the other.
Use small movements and light pressure to suit your Chihuahuaâs size and coat ðŸ
STEP 1: Check the Coat with Your Hands ð€²
Start by gently stroking the back and sides to feel the coat.
For long-haired pups, also check behind the ears, around the chest, and under the front legs.
Never pull at tight mats. Ask a professional groomer for help ð¿

STEP 2: Add SHARMI When Needed ðžð
If the coat feels dry, try adding SHARMI before brushing for moisturizing coat care âš
Follow the product instructions. Begin gently at the back to avoid startling your pup, directing the spray away from the face.

STEP 3: Gently Groom with the Pin Side ð§¡
For long-haired Chihuahuas, work in small sections, following the direction of hair growth.
Support the feathering near the roots with your fingers and gently work from the ends. If the brush catches, pause.
For smooth-coated pups, use light, stroking movements along the back and sides ð¶
With short hair, the pins reach the skin more easily, so avoid pressing down.
The metal pins may feel cool on contact; watch your dogâs response to the sensation. After a walk, once your pup has settled in a cool room, gentle brushing can also be a chance to spend quiet time together ð¿ð
STEP 4: Finish with the Natural Boar-Bristle Side âš
For long-haired pups, use the bristles to finish the feathering and smooth the coat.
For smooth-coated pups, gently brush along the short hair.
With either side, use slow strokes over small areas. Thereâs no need to brush sparsely haired or bony areas ðŸ

7. Areas Worth an Extra Check ð
For long-haired Chihuahuas, pay particular attention to these areas.
ðŸ Behind the Ears
Gently check near the base of the ears for tangles in the soft hair.
ðŸ Chest and Neck
After removing a collar or sweater, check the feathering underneath.
ðŸ Under the Front Legs
Harnesses and sleeves can rub here. Check what you can comfortably reach without forcing your dogâs legs upward.
ðŸ Hind-Leg Feathering and Tail
Take small sections of longer hair in your fingers and check for tangles. Avoid pulling the hair or the tail itself.
For smooth-coated pups, also check the coat and skin wherever a collar or harness sits.
Pairing these checks with everyday routines makes them easier to remember: under the front legs after a walk, or the chest after taking off a sweater ð¡ð§¡
8. How Often Should You Brush a Chihuahua? ðïžð¶
As a general guide, brush long-haired Chihuahuas two to three times a week and smooth-coated Chihuahuas about once a week.
Adjust the frequency to the coatâs condition during heavier shedding periods.
For long-haired pups, a gentle finger check behind the ears and under the front legs between brushing sessions can help you notice tangles early ð
You donât need to groom the whole body every time.
âJust the back today.â
âA little on the chest tomorrow.â ð§¡
If your dog turns away or pulls back, take a break. Start with short sessions they can comfortably enjoy ð¿

9. Making Everyday Life with Your Chihuahua More Comfortable ð¡ð
Affectionate, lively, and sometimes cautiousâChihuahuas show us so many sides of themselves.
Whether your pup is fluffy or smooth-coated, theyâll always be your number one â¡ ð¶
As you brush, you might notice:
âYour fur is so fine right here.â
âDo you prefer having your back brushed rather than your chest?â
Itâs a lovely opportunity to discover one more little thing about your dog ð
Let your pupâs coat and personality guide you, and keep grooming gentle and relaxed ð¿
We hope time with SHARR becomes another happy part of everyday life with your beloved Chihuahua ð¶ð§¡
