In this guide, we’ll explore Chihuahua history, personality, and everyday needs, along with coat care and brushing tips for both long-haired and smooth-coated pups ✨

1. Meet the Chihuahua: A Little Companion from Mexico 🇲🇽🌵

Chihuahuas originate from Mexico and take their name from the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Here’s a fun fact: Chihuahua is Mexico’s largest state by area! 👀

One of the world’s smallest dog breeds, named after Mexico’s largest state—that’s quite a contrast 🤭

Although the breed’s exact origins remain uncertain, Chihuahuas are thought to be connected to the Techichi, a small dog kept by people in ancient Mexico.

These early dogs were more than companions. In some ancient beliefs, they were also thought to guide human souls into the afterlife.

Today, Chihuahuas are cherished around the world as companion dogs and much-loved family members 🏡🧡

2. What Is a Chihuahua’s Personality Like? 🐶💕

Chihuahuas are often described as:

👀 Alert and sometimes wary of unfamiliar things

Some love to stay close to their family but prefer to observe new people from a distance. Others are remarkably confident or happily entertain themselves with a favorite toy 🧸

Of course, every dog is different. Personality is also shaped by individual experiences and the environment they grow up in.

Rather than assuming every Chihuahua will behave the same way, take time to discover your pup’s favorite activities and the kind of interaction they feel comfortable with 🌿

Chihuahuas are among the world’s smallest dog breeds.

Their distinctive features include a rounded “apple-shaped” head, large upright ears, and expressive, rounded eyes 🍎

The FCI breed standard specifies a weight of 1–3 kg, but this is a breed judging standard—not a universal healthy-weight target. Some Chihuahuas are naturally larger, and an appropriate weight depends on each dog’s frame and build.

Despite their size, Chihuahuas are active dogs who enjoy walks and playtime 🐾

For healthy adults, PDSA recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, split into shorter walks. Adjust this to your dog’s age, health, and the weather.

Sniffing, exploring, and working out a treat puzzle can be enjoyable activities, too 🧩✨

And although Chihuahuas are easy to pick up, that doesn’t mean they always want to be carried. Let your pup know you’re there and watch their response before handling them 🧡

4. Understanding Chihuahua Coats: Long and Smooth 🐶✨

Chihuahuas come in two coat varieties.

🤍 Long Coat

Long-haired Chihuahuas have fine, soft fur that may be straight or slightly wavy.

Longer hair, known as feathering, appears around the ears and neck, behind the legs, and on the tail.

Those soft wisps that move as they walk are part of their charm! 🐾

🤎 Smooth Coat

Smooth-coated Chihuahuas have short hair that lies close to the body, with a soft texture and a glossy appearance.

Short hair still sheds, so you may find tiny hairs on your clothes after a cuddle 🤭

Undercoat presence and thickness can vary, too. Choose your grooming approach based on how your dog’s coat actually feels, not just how long it looks 🌿

5. Common Chihuahua Grooming Challenges 🔍🐾

For long-haired Chihuahuas, tangles in the feathering can be a familiar problem.

“Their back feels silky, but there’s a little mat behind an ear!”

“The fur under their front legs looks tangled after I take off the harness.”

Sound familiar? 👀

Longer hair and areas rubbed by clothing or harnesses can develop tangles that aren’t obvious during a quick stroke along the back.

With smooth-coated Chihuahuas, short hairs can collect on blankets and clothing, leaving you wondering how such a little dog sheds so much! 🐶

For either coat type, check the fur and skin as you go and keep grooming gentle 🧡

6. How to Use SHARR on Your Chihuahua 🪮✨

SHARR combines 14-karat gold-plated pins on one side with natural boar bristles on the other.

Use small movements and light pressure to suit your Chihuahua’s size and coat 🐾

STEP 1: Check the Coat with Your Hands 🤲

Start by gently stroking the back and sides to feel the coat.

For long-haired pups, also check behind the ears, around the chest, and under the front legs.

Never pull at tight mats. Ask a professional groomer for help 🌿

STEP 2: Add SHARMI When Needed 🌸🍐

If the coat feels dry, try adding SHARMI before brushing for moisturizing coat care ✨

Follow the product instructions. Begin gently at the back to avoid startling your pup, directing the spray away from the face.

STEP 3: Gently Groom with the Pin Side 🧡

For long-haired Chihuahuas, work in small sections, following the direction of hair growth.

Support the feathering near the roots with your fingers and gently work from the ends. If the brush catches, pause.

For smooth-coated pups, use light, stroking movements along the back and sides 🐶

With short hair, the pins reach the skin more easily, so avoid pressing down.

The metal pins may feel cool on contact; watch your dog’s response to the sensation. After a walk, once your pup has settled in a cool room, gentle brushing can also be a chance to spend quiet time together 🌿💕

STEP 4: Finish with the Natural Boar-Bristle Side ✨

For long-haired pups, use the bristles to finish the feathering and smooth the coat.

For smooth-coated pups, gently brush along the short hair.

With either side, use slow strokes over small areas. There’s no need to brush sparsely haired or bony areas 🐾

7. Areas Worth an Extra Check 🔍

For long-haired Chihuahuas, pay particular attention to these areas.

🐾 Behind the Ears

Gently check near the base of the ears for tangles in the soft hair.

🐾 Chest and Neck

After removing a collar or sweater, check the feathering underneath.

🐾 Under the Front Legs

Harnesses and sleeves can rub here. Check what you can comfortably reach without forcing your dog’s legs upward.

🐾 Hind-Leg Feathering and Tail

Take small sections of longer hair in your fingers and check for tangles. Avoid pulling the hair or the tail itself.

For smooth-coated pups, also check the coat and skin wherever a collar or harness sits.

Pairing these checks with everyday routines makes them easier to remember: under the front legs after a walk, or the chest after taking off a sweater 💡🧡

8. How Often Should You Brush a Chihuahua? 🗓️🐶

As a general guide, brush long-haired Chihuahuas two to three times a week and smooth-coated Chihuahuas about once a week.

Adjust the frequency to the coat’s condition during heavier shedding periods.

For long-haired pups, a gentle finger check behind the ears and under the front legs between brushing sessions can help you notice tangles early 🔍

You don’t need to groom the whole body every time.

If your dog turns away or pulls back, take a break. Start with short sessions they can comfortably enjoy 🌿
